Sanding and Finishing

Sanding and Finishing is the art and science of preparing the surface of a floor after it has been installed (in-situ) and applying protective coatings. Traditionally, this process created a tremendous amount of dust and the fumes from the coatings were enough to keep homeowners out of their home for weeks as the finish cured. However, the aesthetic, the quality, and the craftsmanship involved in a site finished hardwood floor kept the demand for this type of finishing alive and well. Summit first went to a Bona Sand and Finish school in 2005 and has since returned three times to update training. The last school attended by Summit was in 2011 where we received Bona Certified Craftsman status. Since that time, Summit has developed an in-house training school so all of our technicians are trained in the fine art of sanding and finishing using the Bona method.

As with installations, sanding and finishing has well established guidelines as to method, process, chemical compatibility, and expectations regarding final results. A well prepared site finished floor is sanded smooth with few irregularities and sanding marks. Since the final coats are applied in a non-containable environment, some amount of debris in the final finish coat is to be expected. Think of trying to build a spray booth in your garage versus building a hermetically sealed booth. However, as our many satisfied clients attest to, the process of dust free sanding and finishing far surpasses that of traditional methods. In 2005, Summit was the first company in Edmonton, and only the third in Canada, to invest in Dust Containment Equipment to capture the airborne dust created by the sanding process.  This technology captures ~98% of the airborne dust and the results are incredible. This technology coupled with the advanced waterborne finishes we use culminate in beautiful, long-lasting, and durable floors.

We have multiple options for sanding and finishing both new floors and resurfacing older floors. Please see our package information to find the right combination of  products and services for you.
